Why you should attend the Western Canadian Hotel & Resort Investment Conference

It’s more than easy to get conferenced to death. If you accepted every invitation to every industry conference that came your way, you’d be hard-pressed to find time to do anything all year but digest rubber-chicken dinners and collaborate with new-found fast-friends in breakout groups designed to optimize interaction and catalyze brainstorming. It could be a full-time gig.

But then there are those conferences and gatherings that keep enticing you to come back.
The ones that make you think: ‘That was worth it.’

The Western Canadian Hotel & Resort Investment Conference falls into the category of a conference worth attending. It’s a smart conference that attracts a lot of smart people. People from a broad cross-section of disciplines with loads of ideas they’re eager to share and exchange, beyond the hotel and resort industries. It’s an ideal forum for thinking and learning about how we can move our respective businesses forward and do some good, too.

I attended last year, and I look forward to attending again this year as a panel moderator, especially as the panel will follow on from leading pollster and social scientist guru Michael Adams’ morning keynote address.

This should be a fun and insightful presentation, looking at the effect GenXers, Gen Ys and Millenials will have on resorts of the future. Asking how product and its corresponding marketing approach will need to change? Where are the Baby Boomers, and the rest of us trekking along behind, heading?

For my part, I’ll be looking to take the morning session, along with panel members Scott Brown (senior vice president, residential marketing and sales services, Western Canada, Colliers International) and Cam Good (president, The Key), one step further to explore how the changing consumer will affect the product offering and marketing approaches for both urban and resort hotels and real estate product, specifically. How are we going to market and position tomorrow’s hotels and resort real estate for tomorrow’s consumers?

But as I mentioned, this is a conference full of smarty-pants, so there’s plenty more up for discussion. The Impact of China on Western Canadian Recreational Real Estate and Hotels, Recreational Amenities: Profit Centre or Cost Centre and Sustainability and the Application to Hotels and Resorts are just a few of the sessions planned.

We forget how valuable face-to-face interactions can be. On a day-to-day basis, we’re so busy on our iPhones and BlackBerrys, Facebooking, Twittering and e-mailing that we lose sight of the bigger discussions. But deliberations ‘ the kind that take place at conferences like the Western Canadian Hotel & Resort Investment Conference ‘ are priceless. They get the creative juices flowing. They get people talking. They generate ideas. They get people thinking outside of the box.

The one-and-a-half day program begins Monday, October 18th at 2:30 p.m. and ends on Tuesday, October 19th at 5 p.m. It will be held at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
